New pricing terms for .eg
Domain name registrations for the .eg ccTLD, Egypt’s national extension, are now subject to differentiated pricing between local holders and those based abroad.
The previous rate is now only applicable for candidates who can prove to have ties with Egypt. On the other hand, new domain names acquired by holders based abroad are now subject to a premium rate (3 times the current registration price).
In order to benefit from the grid reserved for local holders, it is necessary to be able to prove a presence and/or an activity in Egypt. The criteria enabling the authorities to establish this local presence have been made more flexible, and a foreign organisation that can provide these proofs will be able to claim the local registration conditions:
- A local trademark
- A WIPO-registered trademark designating Egypt
- A local company
- A local representative or distributor
- Invoices issued on behalf of local customers
- An Arabic-language website or social networking presence aimed at the Egyptian public
These provisions are already in force and apply to all new .eg and .com.eg registrations. Domain name renewals will continue to be processed at the current rates.
The registry has also announced that the rates applied to local holders of .eg and .com.eg domain names will be changed as of the 1st of April.
