Now available .商城, Chinese for mall

Like its megamall counterparts around the globe, the New South China Mall, the largest mall in the world, incorporates iconic architecture like the Arc de Triomphe, the Sphinx of Egypt, and even Venice’s canals, concentrating the spectacle of old, grandiose architectural forms into a pastiche of grandeur to heighten the shopping experience and relieve the tension its visitors would no doubt feel wandering through such a vast cavern of commercialism.

But after the South China Mall opened in 2005, it failed to attract tenants. It sat empty and became a “dead mall.” However, the mall reopened earlier this year after “upgrading and retrofitting” and now has over 100,000 visitors a day. It has experienced a very real renaissance, not just a simulacrum of The Renaissance.

The TLD .商城 (punycode .xn--czru2d) means “mall” in Chinese, and it’s been a virtual space we had previously not paid much attention to, like visitors had to the South China Mall. But like the South China megamall, we feel it deserves a renaissance too. So we’re happy to announce that .商城 will now be available from Gandi for $288.19 per year at A rates.
