Arriving soon: .dev domains!
Starting January 16, 2019 at 8:00 AM Pacific (16:00 UTC), .dev domains will be available to register in the Sunrise* phase.
During this phase, those who hold trademarks registered with ICANN’s Trademark Clearinghouse** can register their domain names in .dev for $19.46*** for the first year. The Sunrise phase will end on February 19, 2019 at 7:59 AM Pacific ( 16:00 UTC).
The Sunrise phase will then be followed by the Landrush phase—from February 19 and February 28, 2019—in which those wishing to secure a domain name before the GoLive date can do so for a higher price. The price descends progressively each day of the Landrush phase. The first day, .dev domains will be $10124.89*** for the first year, gradually decreasing to $163.51*** for the first year on the last day.
The more desirable .dev domains will more than likely be registered by the end of this phase. If you need help optimizing your chances of getting a domain, take a look at our guide on the subject.
The GoLive date for .dev domains is February 28, 2019 at 8:00 AM Pacific (16:00 UTC), at which point the .dev release cycle is complete and .dev domains are available to the general public. After the GoLive date, .dev domains will cost $19.46*** per year at A rates.
As for domain names in very high demand, these domains will be sold as Premium domains, which involves a separate pricing structure, independent of the release phase. If you want to register a premium .dev domain in the Landrush phase, be aware that the registry will add the premium price on top of the Landrush price.
One last thing to be aware of when registering .dev domains is that while .dev domins are open to anyone to register, the registry requires that all sites that use a .dev domain must be protected using SSL. That means any site you point your .dev domain to must use https.
In the next few days, it will be possible to submit registrations of .dev domains ahead of time, whether for Sunrise, Landrush, or General Availability. When the phase you select launches, we will submit your registration request to the registry, who will register the requested domains on a first come, first served basis****.
*Since the release phases for new TLDs are determined by the registry that manages them, the length and special conditions that apply to each phase can be different depending on the TLD.
**If you are a trademark holder, in order to register a domain in the Sunrise phase, you must register with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). If you are interested, please contact our Corporate services team for more information.
***Prices are in USD. Local pricing will be available from our price page once .dev launches.
****If you submit your registration request to us ahead of time and if when the phase you registered in arrives and your domain is no longer available, we will credit your prepaid account the amount paid for the domain. You are also entitled to a full reimbursement, which you can receive by requesting one from our Customer care team.
