For our 20th Anniversary, Gandi supports Framasoft
For our 20th anniversary, we’re shining a spotlight on our Gandi Supports partners.
These projects will be the main benefactors of our Gandi 20th anniversary collector t-shirt design contest, using the hashtag #PrintMyGandi.
The three winners of the t-shirt design contest will each get 10 copies of their design and will each choose the project to which proceeds from the sale of their design will go, from among the Gandi supports projects partnering with us for our 20th anniversary.
What’s more, the top winner of the contest will also win a Fairphone, the ethical phone that cares for the environment and the well-being of its inhabitants.
Who is Framasoft?
Framasoft is a non-profit, educational organization created in 2001 with the sole purpose of promoting digital freedoms.
Through free licensing, Framasoft guarantees the fundamental liberties of users, with the goal being to ensure that the humans remain the masters of our digital tools. The organization styles itself as the “front door of the free software world,” but it’s also a bridge between that community and the public at large.
The free internet
Framasoft is also a network based on the principles of free software. By distributing the source code via their official website, they make it public. Additionally, they give preference to contributions from users that offer the possibility to communicate with the authors.
The decentralized internet
A multitude of concrete tools and practices are made available on their website. Many free applications (calendar, USB keys, installers, …), cultural creation tools (blogs, translators, publishing houses…) as well as free services dedicated to the project “De-Google-ify the Internet” are aimed at decentralizing the internet. Among these free services, it’s possible to find, notably, alternative tools like word processors, spreadsheet software, presentation software, and a shared agenda, to cite just a few of the thirty odd options.
The ethical internet
Based on sharing and independence, the Framasoft network is committed to not gathering any information on its users as well as not instituting any form of censorship. No discrimination is practiced so that the most possible users are invited to use these tools—a sincere commitment to not exploit anything for commercial purposes or transfer data to a third party.
The internet for the common good
Created as a non-profit organization, Framasoft works thanks to volunteers and employees for whom the economic system works by pooling energies as well as expenses. Additionally, Framasoft subscribes to a philosophy of popular education. The goal is to spread a maximum of know-how in order to add value to the use of free software and bring about the implementation of free, online services. This sharing of resources, as technical as it is cognitive, makes the internet a common good, accessible to all and not belonging to any individual.
Supported project
The goal of the Gandi supports program is to support projects (principally from assocations and NGOs) that work for the common good (the planet, animals, minorities, etc.) or to promote the free software industry. This support translates into assistance in the form of Gandi products, advice, and experience in order to bring real help in accordance with the needs of the project in question. Framasoft is part of our supported projects program.
Our support to Framasoft takes the form of management and maintenance of their various domain names on our DNS platform.
If you’d also like to contribute to Framasoft, make the most creative t-shirt design and share it on Twitter using the hashtag #PrintMyGandi. You have until April 3 to participate!
Support Framasoft by making a donation on their site.
