1. Maximize your chances at getting a newly released domain

Starting in 2014, ICANN–the organization that coordinates the entire domain name system–has been facilitating the launch of new “top level domains” (TLDs) ranging from .app to .xyz. So far, for our part, Gandi has implemented no less than 664 of these new TLDs and today we offer more than 750 TLD options.

In our article this month on how to maximize your chances of getting a newly released domain, we discuss the different release phases and bring our experience to bear on the subject.

2. Think of your website as a tool

While it’s possible to register a domain name just in order to have a personalized email address, the main use of a domain name is still in order to connect it to a website.

Yet, when it comes time to create a site, many people think of it like a brochure of sorts or a kind of static display case, not what it really is—a tool.

It might seem obvious that creating a website is one use for a domain name. But don’t start by asking if you need a website. Start by asking what your website should do. In this edition of our Domain Name Guide, we discuss how to think of your website as a tool, both for you and for the people who you expect will visit your website.

3. Gandi Social Club, an event that does good!

This Tuesday, October 2, we launched a new series: the Gandi Social Club, which brought together a diverse set of Gandi’s supported projects.

4. New TLD Releases

Four new TLDs of especial interest, are currently in the midst of being launched:

.page, the GoLive date for .page was October 9 (at 9:00 AM Pacific)
.fan, currently .fan is in the Sunrise phase, but you can register it in any of the Early Access Period phases starting December 5 or for the GoLive launch.
.luxe, just finished the Sunrise phase and the Early Access Period phases are beginning October 30.
.sport, is launching simultaneously in the Sunrise and Landrush phases until January 8.
