Video of the moment

WordPress is by far the most widely used CMS, especially for blogs and showcase sites. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of templates and plugins you can add on to your WordPress that enable you to quickly and easily add features to your website whenever you need to.

Installing WordPress on your Gandi Simple Hosting instance is fast, free, and automatic.

What we’re reading

CS Unplugged, screenless computing!

Gandi’s developers love sharing their passion, even with the littlest among us. That’s why we love Unplugged, which promotes computer science among young people who can learn computer science without even using a screen. With the free CS Unplugged collection, access pedagogical material to initiate kids into the tech world with cards, colored pencils, and puzzles.

Check up on your machines

Healthchecks.io lets you easily create “checkpoints,” either self hosted or hosted on a software maintainer website, that send you alerts if they can’t connect (via HTTP “pings”) during a pre-configured period of time. Once a user-defined period of time has passed without response, a notification can be sent (via Webhook, Email, Telegram, etc.) to alert an admin of the problem.

Very easy to integrate in crontabs, these “checkpoints” enable you to detect, for example, that a machine has lost network connectivity (and as a result unable to connect to the checkpoint), or that the backup script couldn’t run in full, etc.

Linux kernel security

The Linux kernel, considering it’s nearly 30 years old, works very well. One of the areas where it could improve, though, is in how it fails when an error occurs. This article discusses the different methods for reaching this goal as well as the difficulties in providing secure solutions base on the Linux kernel.

Tips and tricks

The Public API for Simple Hosting now works! And it’s easy to use

Our public API for Simple Hosting already helps you manage vhosts on existing instances, and very soon you’ll also be able to use it to create and delete Simple Hosting instances. And, of course, everything will be explained in full in our documentation.

The cherry on top

A new distribution is available on Gandi Cloud VPS this week: Arch Linux.

Here are three reasons to try it out:

  1. Arch Linux is open source and intended to be fast and lightweight, with a philosophy of simplicity as a given
  2. The software is constantly in development, with frequent improvements, without major updates like with Ubuntu, for example
  3. There’s a very large community around this system. The wiki and forum are a sort of Bible for Linux users
